Wedding_ringsI know this is a controversial one because age is definitely not the most important determinant of a person’s readiness to take on the responsibilities that come with marriage. Before saying the marital vows, a man should be able to provide for his family physically, emotionally, and spiritually. These are the fundamental requirements to establishing the maturity of a man to get married.

I completed university when I was twenty four. When I had my first full time job at age twenty five, my manager, who was thirty five, called me into his office and asked me “So when are you getting married?”  I was stunned by the question; I had not given any serious thoughts to marriage. My manager, who had just had his first child, added that he believed he should have married by thirty.

After months of thinking about what my manager said, I came to the conclusion that if a man has the ability to provide physically, emotionally, and spiritually for this family, he should get married by thirty; but why did I come to this conclusion?

The retirement age in many countries is sixty years of age. If you marry and have your kids by age thirty five, by the time you turn sixty and have to retire, your last child will be twenty five years old and would have just completed university. You can retire and be able to sustain yourself and your spouse. You will have no expensive school fees to pay and your children may even be on their own. It just makes good financial sense.
